Concentration: City; Buildings; Dystopia

After coming up with so many ideas, I am still wandering which core concept should I choose as my topic for my concentration. I have thought about science-related arts, social issue prompted pieces and my current breadth projects. I was confused and did not know what to do.

During the critique, I really appreciate all the ideas and criticisms on my art works. Even though it was confusing when all of my classmates speak out their own ideas and suggestions, I found all the advices very inspiring to me. Personally, I think my ball project went really well with white outer shells and neon-color painting on the inside. Everything I have done were very different from my initial sketches and blueprints. I really see the critique a best source of information.

Mrs. Jones’ ideas turn out to be the most helpful after all. I really think that taking my breadth pieces and putting them into my concentration would be a good idea. My breadth works have been too much alike and need some more variety so coming up with new piece would improve my breadth portfolio.

However, I can some up or make up my mind for the topic or central idea representing my pieces. Staring with all the projects with black outer cover and vibrant inner color, I do believe that they belong to each other. I first though of “city” or “buildings” to be my subject; yet, I am not sure whether they all related to such idea. I hope that the critique will be hold from time to time in a regular basis. Through such process, we cannot only improve our speaking as well as our independent thinking on artistic styles

2D-3D Richard Pousette-Dart

I am inspired by this art work called the Symphony No. 1, The Transcendental, by Richard Pousette-Dart (1941-1942). This is an art work painted with oil on the canvas and it is currently located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  After he moved to New York, he was influenced by Abstract artists and become the youngest member of the first generation of Abstract Expressionist. In his artwork , he employs think black contour lines and primitive themes. This work introduces an ancient feeling and extraterrestrial like elements.

Flipping through the Art History Book, I was captivated by the 20th Century arts works and especially the paintings from abstract expressionism. I really think this is a positive inspiration according to the painting (2D) I drew from the inspirations and incorporated the elements form cubism arts works (3D). And this time, I am really excited to do the reverse. When I an working on my ap 3D, I thought of add some more 2D elements in addition to the forms and shapes.

This time, I want to add depths into this art work. In order to expand it, i with to adopt the thick lines and primitive patterns. At the same time, I want to add layers of different patterns to this sculpture. However, I am still tying to come up with an idea for the medium since I have been sticked closely to the current mediums. Thus, I will have to look for ideas from the environment or go to the corner of the art room to look for the treasures.

Draft for the AP 3D Concentration

I have been long though about a central idea for my concentration. It has been hard to find an inspiration. Since the start of this school year, we have be suggested to come up with different ideas for our concentration projects. Initially, I was naive and not sure what to to and where to start. Initially, I have come up with an idea to work on pieces that  have corruption with each other, which means that all the work piece is an art work itself but at the same time, form a larger piece.

After seeing all the AP art works and the artists presentations by all my fellow classmates, I start to realized that it is not enough to make an outstanding art work simply with the ideas with lines and shapes. I have found out that an outstanding portfolio is usually more than just portfolio. What I mean is that the art works have an central idea, a voice, and an ideal.

I have been inspired by Ms. Pamela and Mrs. Jones' talk on the topic about racism. Although I did not personally encountered insults based on my race, many of my friends around the world have been facing serious issues regarding discriminations.

Art is an innate language of human, which means that its a way to promote peace. It is evident that art has influences on the community and thus the entire world. This prompted me to rethink about my concentration. Now, I am still seeking for a way to integrate the idea regarding discrimination and racism into works.

Until now, I want to combine 2D and 3D elements. But I am still not sure what kind of medium I would employ. I have always been told to search for novel ideas for materials. I think, I might have to explore and experience new mediums and look for inspirations in my life. I hope, I would come up with an idea that can make the world a better place. If not the world, a small corner in this part of the world.
