Blog assignment- What do you want to do?

After pondering for a good amount of moment in addition to my experience,  I just realized that I want to work on culinary arts. I love biology as well as arts since long time ago. It’s amazing to observe the  complexity and creativity the nature has. I have try hard to establish connections between those two subjects. Ms. Jones and the college counselor from SAIC have told me about Medical Illustration which consists of biological  and artistic elements. However, after looking trough informations, working on projects and trying on different perspective of art. I begin to realize that I didn't want to study biology and art together in terms of Medical Illustration but to work on Art as design and biology in terms of application or technology.

I want to major in product design incorporates culinary arts. It was unbelievable that I found out that I like to bake since I believe those are not suitable for me but others who are neither interested in academic nor artistic field. I believe that I can design sweet and dishes in order to make it a form of beauty instead of simply a substance that people eat.

In the future semester or year, I can work on designing and aesthetic expression through sketches and projects. Regard the theme of the project, I believe that I should develop my own style which can represent or express myself. It was my weak point where I didn’t have my own style but wandering around from one style to another. Most importantly I should set a goal and achieve it.

People enjoy coffee not only it's taste nowadays. People started to concern about artistic values in their lives. The photos above shows that some coffee were used as a medium to do art. They reproduce the image of manga on the surface. I believe maybe culinary arts might be a good choice of both 2D and 3D arts. Besides it can be a medium to express thoughts or ideas just like a pice of paper.

Impression on "Miss Representation"

The trailer of Miss Representation states that "most common way people give up their power is by thinking that they don't have any".  It uncovers a glaring reality that we live with with every day but we fail to see, which is the influences of medias on the false interpretations or representations on both males and females. In the film, it reveals the fact that American teenagers spent 31 hours watching TV, 17 hours listening to music, 3 watching movies, 4 watching magazines 10 hours surfing on the Interned and 10 hours and 45 minutes using media each day.

The multi-medias are shaping the individual including children, society and even the entire world. The documentary is trying to express the truth that girls are getting messages about how they are gonna look like while boys got messages that what is important about girls. We are getting these messages through videos games, advertisements, movies and so on.

I agreed with the documentary that the medias especially the Internet is spreading the biased or distorted messages to us. It has become so powerful since the Internet is instant and wide-spread. We usually believes that girls should be be beautiful and boys should be handsome from the stories diving childhood. Moreover, the media is spreading the concept that girls should be sexy and males should be powerful. However, this is not true. People shouldn't judge a book by its cover as well as a person. We have failed to perceive the intrinsic intelligence of humans since they have being concealed by the appearances of a person. In the film, high school girls spend their breaks between classes to put on make ups and many of them has been annoyed by the judgment basing on the appearances.

The another issue that has been mentioned in the documentary is that women has 51% of proportions of the entire US population, however, females only got 17% in the house of representation and senates. the Media has been manipulated by males and girls have to collaborate and get rid of the ideas spread by the medias in order to become more power and getting equal clouts.

The film challenges the  disparaging portrayals of women limited by medias. Although media, the most persuasive power nowadays, is expressing the ideas of girls being sexually attracting, boys being powerful, and violent scenes, the multi-media is still the effective instruments to make our world better place.

Talking about "Architecture and the Lost Art of Drawing"

The article "Architecture and the Lost Art of Drawing" is mainly talking about the changes due to the innovation of computers and graphing technology. Peoples have become more relying on the assistance of the computer graphing software, such as AutoCAD. In addition, computer is transforming every aspect of how architects work, from sketching to creating complex construction documents. Buildings are computed instead of been  designed visually and spatially. The author emphasize that drawings are not just end products but a part of the thought process of architectural design. More importantly, drawings express the interaction of minds, eyes and hands. He decided to divide architectural drawing into three types, which are “referential sketch,” the “preparatory study” and the “definitive drawing.” Ultimately he created emotional connections with the art works.
As the computer and graphing technology improves, peoples has become more dependent on the computer even sketching or doodling. Thus, people have less opportunity to express their feelings by sketching with hand physically. I agree that drawing with hands on paper is a approach to express our emotion or ideas. I draw pictures with Photoshop sometimes, but that cannot release our feelings by simply sketching on it. I have to worry about the layers and coordinates or some properties that i have to adjust. However, this is easy to accomplish by doodling on a note pad. I can not only improve my skills but also make emotional connections with my works while I'm working on my project at school.
I agree with the author's opinion that computer graphing cannot replace drawing with hands. Drawing, sketching or even doodling are languages that we can use to communicate with others just like chinese and English. Most importantly, drawing can not only express our feelings but creating emotional connections.
